Manwar Khan is a national award-winning, Alberta-based activist, public servant, and diversity advocate with over 17 years of experience working with the Government of Alberta. Originally from Bangladesh, Manwar moved to Canada 23 years ago to study at the University of Lethbridge, where he earned his degree. After graduation, he began his career with the Government of Alberta and has since become a powerful voice for social change.
After witnessing a tragic incident on the Edmonton LRT in 2012, during which he tried to intervene to stop an attack but was unable to do so, the victim ultimately died from the deadly beating. This harrowing experience motivated him to found the Do Not Be a Bystander campaign, a movement that empowers individuals to help others in need and stand against bullying, discrimination, and violence. The campaign operates through four main streams: speaking up against bullying and discrimination, supporting newcomers, addressing domestic violence, and supporting homeless individuals. Through these focuses, Manwar has organized province-wide rallies, workshops, candlelight vigils, and school visits to spread awareness about the importance of speaking up for others and fostering inclusive environments. His work is also included in the University of Alberta’s leadership curriculum, inspiring the next generation to drive positive social change.
In recognition of his selfless volunteer work, Manwar was inducted into The University of Lethbridge Alumni Honors Society in 2015. He has also received one of Canada’s highest honors for community work, the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award, along with the Alberta Community Justice Award in 2018 and the Alberta Inspiration Award in 2022. Manwar’s contributions to promoting diversity, inclusion, and social responsibility have earned him widespread acclaim. Supported by a team of 72 volunteers, his campaign continues to empower victims of bullying and provide vital resources for vulnerable individuals, including those experiencing homelessness. Manwar also regularly speaks as part of the APS Diversity & Inclusion series, helping foster inclusive environments within the Government of Alberta.
Manwar and his wife, Nashid, are both committed public servants with the Government of Alberta, actively contributing to their community. As a devoted family man, Manwar resides in Alberta with his twins, son Adyaan and daughter Ziyana. His journey is a testament to the strength of resilience and empathy, illustrating the profound impact one person can have when they choose to take a stand rather than remain a bystander.
